TIFR GS-2026 Eligibility Criteria (Retyped)
The following eligibility conditions apply to candidates applying through the Graduate School GS-2026 Entrance Examination of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
General Eligibility Rules

Eligibility means the degree that you already have or are currently pursuing and will complete by July 2026.

I-PhD students who successfully complete the program receive an MSc degree along with the PhD.

Students in the I-PhD program may exit with an MSc degree if they fulfill the subject board requirements and declare their intent before the end of the second year, completing all MSc requirements by the third year.

Candidates with a 4-year undergraduate degree with ≥75% aggregate marks may apply directly for the PhD program instead of the I-PhD program. However, they will not receive a Master’s degree together with the PhD unless explicitly allowed by the subject board

Eligibility for PhD
- MTech / ME / MCA / MSc or equivalent degree in
- Electronics & Communication Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Physics or related fields
Eligibility for I-PhD
- BSc (3-year degree) in CS / ECE / EE / Mathematics / Physics
- 4-year degree holders (BTech / BE / BSc) with <75% aggregate or GPA <7.5.
3. Mathematics (PhD / I-PhD)
Eligibility for PhD
- MA / MSc / MMath / MStat / ME / MTech in
- Mathematics
- Statistics
- Science
- Technology
Eligibility for I-PhD
- BA / BSc / BMath / BStat / BE / BTech in Mathematics, Statistics, Science or Technology.
- Candidates with a Master’s in Mathematics or Statistics must apply for PhD only.
4. Biology (PhD / I-PhD)
Eligibility for PhD
- Master’s degree in
- Biology
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
Eligibility for I-PhD
Mathematics
OR 5-year professional degrees such as MBBS / BDS / MPharm / MTech.
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science
OR 4-year degrees such as BTech, BE, BVSc, BPharm
5. Chemistry (PhD / I-PhD)

MSc / MTech / MPharm or equivalent degree
3-year BSc / BS or equivalent degree in science, engineering, or medical sciences including:
Chemistry
Physics
Mathematics
Biology
Biotechnology.
6. Physics (PhD / I-PhD)
Eligibility for PhD
Eligibility for I-PhD
MSc / MS or equivalent degree in Physics
Duration of study must be at least 5 years after Class XII.
BSc / BS / BE / BTech / ME / MTech or equivalent degree in Physics
Or any science/engineering degree of at least 3 years duration.
Candidates already holding a Master’s degree are not eligible for I-PhD
7. Wildlife Biology and Conservation (MSc only) – NCBS Bengaluru
Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
Minimum 50% marks in core subjects
Must demonstrate strong interest in wildlife research and conservation
